Alan was the Founder and Co-director of the Centre for Men’s Health at Leeds Beckett University, he is now Emeritus Professor of Men's Health at the University having retired from his University post in 2017 (www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/school-of-health-and-community-studies/). He was a co-founder of the Men’s Health Forum Charity (www.menshealthforum.org.uk) and was the Chair of the Board of Trustees for 12 years, he is now its Patron. Alan is a Board member of the International Society for Men’s Health.
Alan has a long history of pioneering work in the emerging field of men’s health, which included heading up an international team of academics for the European Commission
‘State of Men’s Health in Europe’ report.
He has recently completed the State of Men’s Health in Leeds study for the Public Health Team and Health & Wellbeing Board of Leeds City Council. Alan is a member of the core group producing the WHO (European Region)
report and strategy on men’s health.
Alan is a Registered Nurse, who completed his initial training on the first Nursing Degree course to be run by the University of Surrey (1978-1982). His Masters’ degree was in Nursing from Leeds Metropolitan University and his PhD was from the Nursing department at the University of Manchester in 2000. Alan was awarded the Royal College of Nursing, Robert Tiffany International Award in 2012.

Conferences, public speaking and media
Alan is an accomplished speaker who has presented over 120 invited conference papers and 45 peer reviewed lectures across the world. He has 5 edited books, 18 chapters, over 90 journal articles and 29 published reports.
Alan has had a high profile media presence over the years including 16 Television appearances including BBC The One Show, BBC Breakfast Show and Sky News. Over 70 radio interviews including BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, and The Women’s Hour, and international stations including South Africa, Australia and the BBC World Service. In addition, he has had over 120 newspaper and magazine interviews, including The New Scientist, The Times, the Guardian and international press including Germany’s Focus.de and The Irish Times.
Teaching / Training
Alan is able to offer teaching and training sessions on many aspects of boys and men’s health and wellbeing, including the running of workshops to both professional and lay groups. These can be tailored to the needs of the group and can be delivered both nationally and internationally.
